Shelties, in my humble opinion, make excellent watch dogs for the following reasons:

1.     They bark loudly.

2.    They bark when someone approaches.

3.     They are somewhat, (and sometimes very) shy, and generally won’t approach strangers.

4.     They are a friendly breed, and generally will not attack or bite.

5.     They are easily trained, and try to please their owner.

These attributes are great for a watch dog, as generally a barking dog will discourage most intruders. With such a low probability of harming an intruder, or worse an innocent person, a lawsuit may well be avoided.

Some folks consider “barking” a fault of the sheltie breed. And if a dog barks continuously, and with a very high pitch that annoys neighbors, this could be so. Barking Links can be found on the Home Page sidebar links. From that point, other barking sites may be found. There are several ways to train a Sheltie to stop or reduce barking, and these sites discuss practical ways of doing this.

It's all in the Bark

Everyone hopes that they will not be targeted as a crime victim of course. And with a barking dog in residence, you may never find out if you were.
